Edward Allen Staub
Edward Allen Staub, 75, passed away in Lakeview on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, surrounded by his loving family after battling a series of strokes.
Ed was born on Sept. 16, 1934 in Ironton, Minn. to Walter Frank and Helen Jane (Roff) Staub.
The Staub family moved from Minnesota to Whitehorse Logging Camp (near Lookout, Calif.). The family relocated to Bieber where Ed graduated from Bieber High School in 1952. While in high school he was active in sports as well as worked numerous part-time jobs.
In November of 1952, Ed married Beverly Watson and from this union four children were born.
In 1952, Walt Staub purchased the Standard Oil Distributorship in Bieber. During this time Ed worked for his father, as well as drove logging and lumber trucks. In June of 1959, Ed became the plant manager in Westwood, Calif. for Standard Oil Co. In September of 1959, at age of 25 he purchased the Standard Oil Distributorship in Alturas, Calif.
Ed had the foresight to realize that he would need to grow and diversify his business in the rural areas to be a survivor in his business. With Ed’s family joining the business and the petroleum industry changing, opportunities arose to expand his geographical locations to include Northeastern California, Central/Eastern Oregon as well as Southern Idaho. He also acquired the Texaco and Shell brands in addition to expanding into the convenience store and propane businesses.
After his first stroke in 2005, which slowed him down, he continued to stay active in his business. His priorities were hard work, service and honesty for his customers. He strived to instill this priority in his family and employees. Ed’s work ethic was strong. He modeled that work ethic for his children and never expected more from others than he expected from himself.
Ed’s fondest times were those spent with family, whether it was work, hunting, attending his children/grandchildren’s activities or visiting with friends/customers. His grandchildren were the light of his life and the joy that kept him working to overcome his strokes. In later years with the help of Jim Ireland, he took great pride in watching each and every grandchild’s event when they were on the same day and miles apart.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Helen Staub; sister Nell Matthews; grandson-in-law SSG Chris Webb.
Ed is survived by his wife Lynne of Alturas; sons and daughters-in-law David and Sandi Staub of Lakeview and Brad and Dori Staub of Tulelake, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Debbie and Ron Campbell of Alturas and Kathy and Joe Oates of Alturas; sister Laura Squires; sister and brother-in-law Karen and Benny Lentz; granddaughter Sarah Campbell and fiancé Sam Harris of Beaverton; grandchildren and spouses Ryan and Becca Campbell of Boise, Idaho, Danny and Shannon Moore of Salem; grandchildren Joey Staub of Portland, Mary and Logan Staub of Lakeview, Shalan Webb and Skyler Oates of Fair Haven, N.J., Dustin Oates and Jared Staub of Boise and Nick and Hayden Staub of Tulelake; Lynne’s two daughters Annie Staples of Alturas and Debbie Walker of Fair Oaks, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was delighted to be able to meet his first great-granddaughter Mary Webb of Fair Haven, N.J. in November of 2006 and his second great-granddaughter Gracyn Campbell of Boise in December of 2008.

Alfred Leon “Short” Roberts
Alfred Leon “Short” Roberts went to be with the Lord Monday, Jan. 25, 2010 in his Redmond home of natural causes.
He was born to Alfred and Alta M. Wright Roberts on July 9, 1925. Short was given his nickname by his family because he was the first of six children and was the little “Shorty” running around. The name stuck his whole life, almost everyone that knew him called him Short.
He grew up and worked in the Roseburg area until he joined the Marines in 1943. He served in the First Marine Second Division during World War II in the South Pacific Invasion as a heavy equipment operator. He received a purple heart for being wounded in the line of duty. After being honorably discharged from the service in 1946, he came back to Oregon where he worked as a logger in Oregon and California.
He married Alta B.(Moon) Terrell on Sept. 3, 1966 and became an instant father to Alta’s three teenage girls. On June 4, 1971 Short and Alta were blessed with a daughter Mary. In 1976 Short and his family moved to Fort Rock and started a cattle and alfalfa ranch. He lived there with his wife for 32 years until they moved to Redmond in 2008 due to Short’s ongoing medical issues.
Roberts was preceded in death by his daughter Karyn; brother Kenny; sister Lucille; great-grandson Ryan.
Short loved to hunt and fish with family and friends, teaching many of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren hunting safety and fishing strategies. A highlight of visiting Short, was listening to his fantastic stories filled with “colorful commentary”. He had seen and done so much in his life that listening to him was a page of history. Even if you had heard the story a 1000 times, and could repeat it right along with him, it was still a treat to hear it again.
He is survived by his wife Alta; daughter LaRayne Kayfes; daughters and sons-in-law Fran and Mark Adams and Mary and Jeff Nash; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren (more on the way); many step-grandchildren as well.
