Joanne Quinlan Flynn

Joanne Quinlan Flynn, 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Lake District Hospital in Lakeview on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008 .
Joanne was born on Sept. 4, 1916, to James J. and Margaret McAuliffe Quinlan in Rowels, Meelin, County Cork, Ireland. She was the second of eight children. She arrived in New York on Jan. 13, 1950, intending to visit relatives there as well as in San Francisco, Calif. and Lakeview.
During this time, she worked as a nurse’s assistant at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and Saint Joseph’s Hospital in San Francisco. During a visit to her aunt Mary Francis Fitzgerald -in Lakeview, she met and later married her husband of 37 years, Tom Flynn. They were married in San Francisco on May 3, 1952, and moved to Lakeview shortly thereafter. Joanne became a United States citizen on Sept. 2,1958.
Living in Lakeview, Joanne dedicated her life to being a stay-at-home mother raising her children and caring for grandchildren in later years. She was very active in her church and community. As a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, she served as president of the Altar Society and was an instructor in the CCD program. Joanne was also instrumental in persuading the Sisters of the Atonement to locate a convent in Lakeview. This provided religious instruction to the youth of St. Patrick Parish and its missions in Paisley, Plush and Adel.
Joanne was a charter member of the Lake District Hospital Women’s Auxiliary; she also served as president. She spent many years volunteering in the hospital’s long term care facility organizing games, birthday parties, and arts and crafts, as well as the annual Holiday Fair. She also volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother and a Camp Fire leader. Organizing the annual Red Cross Blood Drive was another of her activities.
Never forgetting her roots, Joanne passed on her love of Ireland to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed following her grandchildren’s activities and Lakeview High School sports. Her last year was spent on her son Dennis and daughter-in-law Andrea’s ranch in Adel. She maintained her own home, helped Dennis feed the calves, and-spoiled the dogs and cats. She was very content, and the rural lifestyle reminded her of growing up in Ireland.
She will be fondly remembered by friends and family as a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. A compassionate friend of everyone whose lives she touched, Joanne was truly a lady, gracious and kind to all.
Joanne was preceded in death by her husband Tom on Jan. 13, 1989; her parents James and Margaret; brothers Jim, Mossie, Pat and Dave; sisters Sheila and Dora.
Joanne is survived by her son and daughter-in- law Dennis and Andrea Flynn of Adel; son Jim Flynn of Reno, Nev.; daughter and son-in-law Maureen and Joe Gagliardi of Eldorado Hills, Calif.;sister Kathleen Quinlan of San Francisco; grandchildren Erin, Megan, and Tom Flynn; Dominic, Brian, and Brady Gagliardi.
