Lake County Sheriff Office Report

Sunday, March 24 — Deputies were contacted at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office substation by the reportee who found an undisclosed amount of money in the ATM machine at the Christmas Valley Chevron. The reportee said he found the cash money, in $20 bills, in the ATM as he used the machine. The reportee turned the money into the Sheriff’s Office because he said it was the right thing to do. The surveillance footage and ATM was viewed and a possible victim was identified. Contact was made however it is undetermined if the individual contacted was in fact a victim. Bank records are being evaluated to determine if there is any monetary loss to the possible victim. The money has been logged into the evidence room at the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for safekeeping at this time. Investigation is ongoing.

Monday, April 1 —Deputies responded to Town Hall regarding a burglary. Employeeßs reported after entering the building through the main front door she noticed the back door had been breached. The building was cleared for possible suspect(s) however it was found to be empty. Video of the suspects was recovered and has been placed into evidence. The video captured the suspects during the burglary and they were identified with assistance from Modoc County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.

Friday, April 5 —Deputies contacted the victim of a possible mail theft. The victim stated that he went to the post office to retrieve his mail and found a letter addressed to him that was supposed to contain cash. The letter had been tampered with and the cash was missing. The mail had originally been delivered to an incorrect address and written on the envelope was “delivered to wrong address”. The envelope was placed in the victim’s PO Box however the envelope was empty. Investigation is ongoing.

Friday, March 29 — Justin Scott, 25 of Klamath Falls was stopped for a speed violation. A DMV and wants check revealed that he was driving while suspended. Scott was issued a criminal citation for ORS 811.182 driving while suspended mis-demeanor. 

Tuesday, April 2 — A traffic stop was initiated on a motor vehicle for an observed traffic violation. Signs of criminal activity were observed. A consent search revealed suspected methamphetamine and morphine controlled substances and drug paraphernalia. The driver, Jamie Elizabeth George, 35 was cited and released for PCS Methamphetamine. The passenger, Melissa Leigh Townsend, 36, of Alturas was lodged at the Lake County Jail for PCS schedule II controlled substance and a misdemeanor warrant out of Klamath County. 

 Wednesday, April 3 — A traffic stop was initiated on a red Chevrolet Silverado for an observed traffic violation. Nicholas Michael Crane, 31, of Santa Fe, N.M. was not licensed to drive and the vehicle was uninsured. Crane made suicidal statements up on learning the vehicle was being towed. The truck was recovered by Don Deiter’s Towing. Crane was transported to Lake District Hospital and placed on a police officer hold. 

Wednesday, April 3 — A traffic stop was initiated on a blue Toyota for an observed traffic violation. Signs of criminal activity were observed. A consent search revealed suspected methamphetamine drug paraphernalia and a weapon that was restricted for a felon to possess. The driver, Vernon John Norwest, 44, of Klamath Falls was lodged at the Lake County jail for PCS methamphetamine and felon in possession of a restricted weapon
