An Apology to Foster Glass and to our Community

On Oct. 10, 2016 the Christmas Valley/North Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted a Candidates Forum at North Lake School.  The Candidates present were; Commissioner Brad Winters, commission candidate Bruce Webbon, Sharon Forester - the remaining candidate for Lake County District Attorney and a late-comer to the District Attorney race, Foster Glass, who is campaigning as a write-in candidate.

The Chamber was wrongly informed that in Oregon only candidates whose names appear on the official ballot are allowed to actively participate in the forum process.  Forester was alledgedly the source of this information and because she is an attorney the Chamber members facilitating the event took her at her word and denied Foster Glass the opportunity to state his position and actively participate in the question and answer element of the event.

We were in error and that error was recently pointed out to us.  To obtain accurate information we contacted the Oregon Secretary of State’s office and requested clarification on the matter.  Below is what the rules really are:

There is no Oregon statutes or rules pertaining to political or candidate forums.  It is up to the event hosts to state the criteria in which their event will function.

With this in mind we again apologize to Mr. Glass and the Community and intend that future forums embrace the true meaning of Democracy by being open to all persons seeking election.
