Wanting to go back to its normal bell schedule Lake County School District #7 (LCSD#&) Supt. Michael Carter told the LCSD#7 Board on Wednesday, Nov. 18, that all schools within the school district will be going back to their pre-COVID bell schedules beginning Monday, Dec. 7; along with approving agreements and policy changes.

Carter said that when they were originally working on getting students back into the classroom at the beginning of the school year, one of the major sticking points for the district was the issue of transportation. With the need to maintain social distancing on the school buses, and having a limited number of school buses, Carter and the administration decided that while students would return to school for the normal five days a week, the elementary and middle/high school would start at different times. Carter said that experiment is over as the potential transportation bottleneck of not having enough room has proven to be untrue.

“This will allow students to have more instructional time in the classroom. There were times only one or two students were on the bus, so we do not think keeping social distance on the bus will be an issue going forward,” said Carter.

Both principals, Susan Warner for the elementary schools and Lane Stratton for the middle/high school, said that it is important to have children in the classroom and that reverting to the normal daily schedule will help bring normalcy back to the students across the district. Not only are the children able to learn, the District believes this will help kids with tough living situations to get hot meals while they are at school.

The District does not want to close unless they absolutely have to.

While there have been some cohorts that have had to go into quarantine, Carter does not plan on closing unless he runs out of substitute teachers or the case numbers keep going up.

The Board also approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the school district and the Lakeview branch of the Oregon Education Association on the school nurse contract and the services that will be provided to students.

Additionally the Board approved an Inter-governmental agreement with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for the School Resource Officer; the district is now waiting for the Sheriff’s Office to approve it.

An update to the District’s communicable disease policy for students and teachers was approved, along with a new sexual harassment policy. The updated policy clarifies language around COVID and streamlines when it is appropriate to send people home if they are sick.

The Board approved paying the balance of $29,517 to Dynamic Energy Solutions for the installation of new football lights; the rest was paid through the Energy Trust of Oregon grant, which paid for brand new lights at all of the school buildings across the District.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 9, 5:30 p.m.
