Holiday food distributions are starting up once again with the first food basket distribution occurring on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4 – 6 p.m. at the Lake County Food Share warehouse located at 247 N. N St., Lakeview.
Every year the Lake County Food Share distributes food baskets to the community on three separate holidays with no need to show a financial hardship. The other two food basket distributions will occur near Christmas and Easter.
Unlike in previous years, the Lake County Food Share held a special food box distribution early in COVID and developed a box of mostly non-perishable food that they were able to hand out in a socially-distanced manner.
For the Thanksgiving food box giveaway, people are asked to observe social distance guidelines. Recipients will check in one at a time to make sure that the warehouse does not become overcrowded.
Each box will have the same non-perishable food items in it and include such things as side dishes, potatoes, and other items people will need for Thanksgiving dinner. While the boxes will remain the same, people picking up boxes will have the option to choose what kind of meat they want when they check in. The choices are turkey, ham or ground beef. After people pick up their box, they can decide to load the box into their own vehicle or have one of the volunteers load the box for them. When people check in they will need to say how many people are living in their household as that will determine the size of box they receive.
For the elderly or those unable to leave their homes, there will be delivery available, though they will need to schedule an appointment no later than Friday, Nov. 20. People requesting delivery will need to leave a detailed message including their full name, number of adults and children in the home, address, phone number and what meat they would like. Someone will need to be at the home to sign for the box.
