Practicing your relaxing trigger words might not limber you up, but the fall session of Gentle Yoga “Back to Health” Classes might.
Beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 29 through Wednesday, Nov. 14, yoga classes will run through a 12-week course aimed to develop mindfulness, yoga techniques and overall well-being.
The classes will begin at 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday during the week, and last until around 6:45 p.m. Participants will head over to the Presbyterian Church on 619 S. 1st St. in Lakeview for the classes.
Attendees will be able to use chairs, props and supports in order to progress through the class as well. Those individuals who already have their own yoga mat are encouraged to bring it. Focusing on breathing patterns will be another strongly enforced side of the sessions.
Required to have two instructors to manage all the classes moving parts, the sessions will be taught by Francine and Jason Winters. Both are certified yoga instructors, but have different backgrounds in the field.
After some back issues in his late forties, Jason started pursuing yoga after watching his wife progress through the activity. Focusing in senior populations and therapeutic adaptation, Jason felt passionately about this area of the field when he saw how much it helped him at the age of 72.
Francine decided to focus in emotional trauma through the Veteran’s Yoga Project, helping those individuals use yoga to cope with PTSD.
The course will progress in three to four week segments, giving participants take home exercises to try as well as increasing to a few more advanced positions by week 12.
Taking advantage of doing these exercises for just thirty minutes a day could push the participants toward achieving their health goals and a better quality of life.
“That’s when the magic is going to happen for them, that’s when they’re going to see a big reduction in their pain and well-being,” said Winters.
Made possible by the use of multiple grants, the classes run through both a pre and post survey in order to show the progression and the effectiveness of the program.
As some individuals drop out, this causes the data to become less and less important and will eventually lead to the unsustainability to keep the classes as a free event.
Attendance is a must and something that Winters wants to focus on specifically this year.
