Christmas Valley soup kitchen

People enjoy a meal from the Christmas Valley Soup Kitchen.

Christmas Valley Soup Kitchen reopened Tuesday, Oct. 6 and is serving meals every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. through late May, 2021. Meals are served at the Christmas Valley Community Hall free of charge to anyone who would like to eat.

Soup kitchen volunteer coordinator Barbara Ferrando has been leading the effort for four years under the umbrella of Christmas Valley Park and Rec, which sponsors the soup kitchen.

A group of eight volunteers helps cook and serve the meals each week, Ferrando said. Every meal consists of a salad and soup, a main course and a dessert. The crew makes an effort to vary the menu, with a different meal offered each week.

The soup kitchen operates from October through the third week of May. During the time the kitchen is closed, Ferrando said, Christmas Valley Park and Rec holds bakes sales on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekend to raise funds to continue running the soup kitchen.
