Mesa Greenfield, infection prevention/employee health RN, was recently named Lake Health District’s 2020 Employee of the Year. Greenfield has been with the Health District for 18 years and was responsible for administering all vaccines for LHD employees who opted to receive one.

“Lake Health District traditionally announces their employee of the year during the annual Christmas party. Due to COVID restrictions, the 2020 event had to be canceled. We would like to take this opportunity to announce our winner,” LHD shared on its Facebook page Thursday, Feb 18. Greenfield was named 2020 Employee of the Year during a gathering in the LHD cafeteria that day.

In an email to the Lake County Examiner, Greenfield related, “I am blown away and completely honored to have won this award. This past year has been full of trials and tribulations and our entire staff at Lake Health District has worked tirelessly during the pandemic to ensure that our community was taken care of.”

According to LHD’s post, Chief Nursing Officer Teresa Squires presented Mesa with her plaque and read what fellow employees had to say about her nomination. The post shared “just a few out of a long list of commendations from her peers.”

“Mesa has worked tirelessly during the past year to help the hospital & community with vaccines and infection control. This lady is constantly busy and deserving of recognition,” one employee said.

LHD was able to start administering the first of the two-dose Moderna vaccine to its employees on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020. Greenfield gave vaccinations over three consecutive days: Dec. 29, 30 and 31. She vaccinated 110 people in those first three days and gave many more doses in the weeks that followed.

LHD employees are not required to receive the vaccine; it is simply offered as an option if they choose to take advantage of it.

Another of Greenfield’s colleagues credited Greenfield with doing “a great job educating employees about COVID” and working with doctors and other departments within LHD to keep staff safe and to determine best practices during such a challenging time. The person also said Greenfield stays current on infection control issues and numbers.

A third LHD employee expressed that Greenfield has been an integral part of how LHD has managed the COVID-19 pandemic, adding, “Her hard work and dedication is appreciated.”

In a Facebook comment congratulating her colleague, RN Abigail Tracy Finetti called Greenfield “such a deserving and fantastic nurse” and noted, “You’ve always worked so hard, and even this year did it with a contagious smile … compassion towards all, and a desire to educate.”
