Two Lakeview High School students have been awarded the Noni Vandenberg Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded by Lakeview High School Honor Society in memory of Noni Vandenberg. Vandenberg was a middle school math teacher and every student who came into her classroom loved her for her kind personality and selfless attitude.
This is the third year that the scholarship was awarded. It is a $500 scholarship that is given to a Lakeview High School senior who writes an essay that pertains to a quote. This year’s quote was “Minds are like flowers; they only open when the time is right.”
There were nine outstanding applicants that made the recipient selection difficult. This year, Lakeview High School Honor Society was fortunate enough to choose two recipients. In the past two years, only one scholarship was awarded, but an anonymous donation made during last year’s Noni Color Run made it possible to award two.
This year’s recipients are Sarah Theall and Jaycie Deter. Both Theall and Deter expressed individualism and vulnerability in their essays that made them stand out. Theall plans to attend Oregon State University’s Honors College in the fall to major in agricultural sciences; she is currently interested in pursuing a career as an agricultural attorney or using her degree within the state legislature.
Deter is attending Linn-Benton Community College in the fall. She plans to transfer to a four-year university after Linn-Benton to pursue a sociology degree and would like to attend law school after her undergrad is finished.
