At the centennial celebration of the Lake County Round-Up last summer, the Desert Cruisers once again drew a large crowd to the Lake County Fairgrounds to indulge in some car-crushing mayhem at the annual Destruction Derby.
While the action on the fairgrounds was intense, behind the scenes members of Lakeview Booster Club were actively working along with the Desert Cruisers car club to facilitate all aspects of the event.
Under an agreement between the two organizations, at Wednesday’s Booster Club meeting Jennifer Simpson of Desert Cruisers presented the fruits of their hard-earned labor – a check for over $10,200. The total was determined as 35% of profits from the event, which saw larger-than-average crowds in part thanks to the 100-year anniversary of the Round-Up. It was the first year that the Lakeview Booster Club had actively participated in supporting the event.
Simpson presented the check to five senior members of the Lakeview High School boys basketball team, fitting in that the funds provided will benefit youth programs and extra curricular activities.
Every term Booster Club provides funding for school athletics ranging from uniforms to fees and transportation costs.
On Wednesday evening Booster Club members voted to approve funding for winter term sports. Distributions include $3,500 for the LHS wrestling program, $3,000 for men’s and women’s basketball, $750 for the LHS cheerleading program, $2,000 for band and choir, and $1,500 for the LHS equestrian team. These funds help cover costs for new uniforms, transportation and lodging at tournaments, horse stall fees, and more.
Lakeview Booster Club meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the LHS Computer Lab, unless otherwise noted.
