John Harker Bogardus

John Harker Bogardus

John Harker Bogardus, 70, passed away in Lakeview on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019. He was a husband, father, friend and attorney.

John was born Jan. 20, 1949 in Eugene to Robert A. and Sarah (Ray) Bogardus. He received his undergraduate and law degree from Willamette University in 1974 and passed the Oregon Bar exam soon after. John's inspiration to become an attorney came from his maternal grandfather and he practiced law for over 40 years from the same desk his grandfather used. John originally accepted a position with a law firm in downtown Portland but his love of Eastern Oregon and the high desert called him. He soon moved to Lakeview to practice law with Robert F. Nichols Sr. John retired from his law practice after more than 40 years of practicing in Lakeview. He and his then wife, Nancie Berwick, raised two sons, Brad and Brian in Lakeview. Being a father was one of the true blessings in his life and John enjoyed coaching the boys in Little League and Babe Ruth and took much pride in watching his sons participate in Lakeview High School sports and activities.

John married Joni Kness in 2006. They enjoyed travelling to the Baja and taking "road trips" around the United States. He took great joy in planning their various adventures. John was an avid Oregon Duck fan as well as a lifelong GreenBay Packer and Atlanta Braves fan. They often attended home and away Duck games, made two trips to GreenBay and attended games at Turner Field in Atlanta. Most weekends and road trips were spent taking the "road less travelled" in his Jeep. John loved exploring new country, weekend trips to Reno, camping trips and day drives exploring the Lake County high desert and beyond.

John had a passion for community involvement. He was active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1536, Rotary International, Order of the Antelope and the First Presbyterian Church. He held many officer positions in the organizations in which he held membership. He was a recipient of the Lake County Chamber of Commerce Junior First Citizen Award. John enjoyed announcing football games for the Lakeview Honkers and watching Monday Night Football at the Elks.

John was preceded in death by: his parents; and daughter-n-law, Elissa Bogardus.

He is survived by: his wife, Joni; sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Kaitlyn Bogardus and Brian and Jessica Bogardus; brother, Robert Bogardus; sister, Jane Bogardus; and granddaughter, Brooklyn Bogardus.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Lakeview Elks Lodge, 323 N. F St., Lakeview with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Lakeview Community Partnership (LCP) Alger Theater Renovation Fund or the Lakeview Elks Lodge #1536 building fund.
