Lakeview Girls Cross Country qualified as a team for the state championships, sending seven members to Eugene to race Oregon’s best on Saturday at the Lane Community College campus.
With the top-10 earning medals, two Lakeview runners won a place on the podium, sophomore Ella Villagrana finishing ninth at 19:47.0 and junior Kaley Schneider placing 10th at 19:50.4. Schneider’s finish marked the first sub-20 minute time of her career, a personal best.
Head Coach Bobbie Steninger had challenged the team to run as hard as they had in the district championships, where the majority of the team set personal best marks, and the team didn’t disappoint.
Senior Julia Ketcham was Lakeview’s third runner to finish, placing 19th overall at 20:34.6 – the second best time of the year for Ketcham. Scarlett Taylor finished 47th at 22:35.4 – a season-best time for Taylor by over 20 seconds. Sophomore Maycie Warda finished 68th at 25:14.1, her first sub-26 minute time all season. Alexis McBain placed 77th at 25:50.7, and rounding out Lakeview’s competitors was Samantha Hopper at 84th at 27:56.4 – a personal record by over a minute.
With the girls’ tremendous individual efforts, the team score of 128 was good enough for fifth place in the state among the 1A/2A/3A divisions. Burns High School won the girls state team title. Lakeview’s boys team did not qualify for the state championship.
Although the Lakeview High School Cross Country team celebrated the end of its season on Tuesday with an awards banquet, for select athletes their season is still not done. Lakeview High School will compete at the NXR Northwest Regional Championships in Boise, Idaho on Saturday, Nov. 16.
