A select few runners and walkers willing to brave bone-chilling temperatures clad in spirited costumes participated in the Mile High Striders annual costume treasure hunt.
Held in the late afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 29, the event sent participants on a 2.6 mile course through Lakeview with clues directing each to the next stop. Beginning and ending at Steninger Track on the Lakeview High School campus, the annual fun run is part of a monthly tradition by the local running club to host various themed-community runs.
While normally Lakeview High School athletes from the cross country and track and field teams regularly participate, the event coincided with the cross country district championships in Eugene on the same day.
Mark Price was the first to finish the course, in a time of 27:47. Helena Van Brande (29:13), Eric Sarensen (29:48), Sara Sarensen (30:32) and Deb Watts (39:56) completed the field of participants.
Each runner received socks as a prize for completing the course, and Van Brande received an additional prize for best costume.
The next Mile High Striders event will be the annual Turkey Trot, a race that includes each participant running with a “turkey leg” baton. The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 27 at 9:30 a.m. at Steninger Track. Registration is $5, with proceeds benefiting the LHS cross country and track & field programs.
