While many packed on the pounds on Thanksgiving day, an enthusiastic group braved cold conditions to instead work off calories at the annual Mile High Striders’ Turkey Trot.
Held on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 28 starting at 9:30 a.m. at Steninger Track on the Lakeview High School campus; the event was a 5K fun-run/walk with a relay race twist. Coordinated as part of the monthly running events under Mile High Striders, a Lakeview-based running club that supports LHS cross country and track and field, a group of a dozen walkers and runners (plus one canine companion) looped through Lakeview on a 5,000-meter course that started at ended at Steninger Track.
The Turkey Trot offers a different take on the monthly 5K runs, with a three-member team relay option utilizing a turkey leg as an official baton. After all completed the course, prizes were awarded for not only the top times, but also for the best holiday ugly sweater. Participation in the event was free for Mile High Striders members, and $5 for non-members.
Lacey Howard won the 5K run as an individual runner, while among relay teams the winners were Caleb Howard, Brent Corning and Chelsea Long. Other race participants included Sarah Bowersox, Julia Ketcham, Eric Sarensen, Mike Cuff, Sara Sarensen, Katelyn Wolff, Sammy Sharpe and Deb Watts.
Proceeds from Mile High Striders monthly events benefit LHS cross country and track and field programs. Commonly current members of those teams actively participate in Striders’ runs.
