After a year in which performances had to be recorded and then released online for families and community members to view A.D. Hay Elementary, Union Elementary, and Daly Middle School/Lakeview High School music groups will be performing for the public on two days — Wednesday, May 12, and Friday, May 14, at the Alger Theater.
The event will feature students performing a variety of songs and musical styles in front of a live audience for the first time since 2020. At the end of the 2019-20 school year there was no performance, as schools were not in session and everything was virtual.
Jenna Kohut, who teaches music at the Daly Middle/Lakeview High School, said most students were more nervous about performing in front of a camera than performing live. She said she and the students are excited to perform in front of a live audience once more. Susanne Davis, elementary school music teacher, said her students enjoyed last year’s concert but being filmed in the classroom is not the same as being on stage.
The concert on Wednesday, May 12, will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature the Daly Middle/Lakeview High School band under the direction of Kohut. The band will be performing a melody of oldies and rock and roll classics from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
On Friday, May 14, the elementary school concert will begin at 5:30 p.m. Union Elementary School students will perform a variety of popular tunes on bucket drums. Students from A.D. Hay Elementary School will perform four songs including Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; La Bamba; Three Little Birds; and Take Me Home, Country Roads.
Due to COVID restrictions a total of 150 people will be allowed in the Alger Theater and people will need to wear face coverings while they are attending the concert. The event is free for the public to attend.
