Thomas (Tom) F. Stewart

Thomas (Tom) F. Stewart, 84, of Redmond passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Dayton on Dec. 15, 1936, son of the late Samuel and Mildred Stewart. Tom was the youngest of four brothers and a cousin who was raised by the family, all of whom preceded him in death. Tom was raised in Mill City and Scio. He graduated from Scio High School and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955.

Thomas married Ann K. (Overlund) in Dec. of 1957, in Stevenson, Wash. They were happily married for over 55 years until her death on June of 2012. Tom married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Jean Cowden in December of 2012.

Tom always wanted to be an independent businessman. After returning from the Navy in 1959 he joined his father, three brothers and cousin in the family grocery business. His fourth brother, Charlie Stewart, owned the grocery store in Mill City. The family business ran four grocery stores in the cities of Hermiston, Pendleton, Umatilla and Pilot Rock. The Hermiston store was remodeled in 1965 and the grand opening featured Kirby Grant of the TV series Sky King. The grand opening included a giveaway of five TV sets in color. Tom and the family moved to Lakeview in 1967 to open another grocery store. The store burned down in 1968 and the family moved back to Hermiston. Tom and Ann loved Lakeview and the friendships they developed, so the family moved back to Lakeview six months later. They ran Stewart's Marketeria for over 38 years. In 1977, Stewart's Firefighter Food Catering was created from a conversation and an idea in Tom's head. The business started from small beginnings with an 18 foot trailer and for over the last 40 years has flourished into a major national catering operation.

Tom was a member of Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond and Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Lakeview, Knights of Columbus and Lakeview BPOE #1536 Elks Lodge. He was also an avid supporter of local charities in Lakeview.

Thomas was preceded in death by: his wife, Ann K. Stewart; parents, Samuel and Mildred Stewart; brothers, William Stewart, Campbell Stewart, Charlie Stewart and Jack Stewart; and his daughter, Kathy A. Stewart (Blalock).

Thomas is survived by: his wife, Shirley of Redmond; daughters, Susan Stewart and Carolyn Stewart of Redmond; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and along with his nephews and nieces.
