Town of Lakeview recently discovered that it is the victim of two fraudulent financial transactions that may be due to a cybersecurity or other breach, the Town noted in a Thursday, Dec. 1 press release. At this time, the total loss is estimated to be approximately $199,000.
“An incident response team has been activated to investigate the fraudulent transactions, evaluate the extent of the transactions, and ensure that technology and policies are implemented to prevent future fraudulent transactions,” the press release states. It adds that the Town has also initiated its own internal investigation and is assessing all available avenues to recoup the funds.
Notifications have been made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and other appropriate authorities, the Town stated. The Town said it will assist and cooperate with any investigation conducted by the authorities and “is taking appropriate action to hold accountable whomever is responsible for the fraudulent transactions.”
“To prioritize security and ensure the integrity of the pending investigation,” the Town said at this time it will not release or provide any additional information concerning the fraudulent transactions. “However, Town is committed to sharing as much information about the transactions as possible, while protecting sensitive information that could compromise Town’s security,” the release concluded.
